At Jajamän, we’re not just committed to making functional backpacks; we’re just as committed to doing it ethically at every step of the production process. We’ve made sure that it’s not just the people who wear our backpacks who are better off, but also everyone and everything affected along the way - the oak trees that are harvested for cork, all the people who help make the bags, and the environment at large.
Cork is a fantastic material. It’s often compared with lambskin in durability but is also water-repellent, stain-resistant and planet-friendly. The fabric is obtained from the bark of cork oak trees and generated into leather that is not only vegan and cruelty-free, but also ecological. It has a natural feel to it and we can’t help but think it’s the perfect material to make our bags from. Every step, from harvesting to production into cork leather, is done ethically in Portugal.
All our bags are carefully sewn in a small factory in the North of Portugal. Our team has repeatedly visited the factory and we’ve worked on the style together, exchanging our Nordic vision of function with the Portuguese artisanal production methods. Our joint effort has led to the creation of the Tottakai backpack, a bag that meets our highest quality standards. We’ve chosen to produce in Portugal not just for the sake of closeness, collaboration and quality, but also to support manufacturers that operate in secure and safe environments. Fair wages and good working conditions are standard practices not just at our factory, but also throughout Portugal.
Straps and webbing
After searching for a material that would be both sustainable and functional for our backpack’s straps and webbing, we settled on recycled polyester, also known as rPET. Polyester has great functional qualities such as endurance and being lightweight. rPET is obtained by melting down existing plastic and re-spinning it into new polyester fiber. The main reason for using it is that we wish to keep plastics from going to landfills and the ocean. Besides, rPET is just as good as virgin polyester, but it takes fewer resources to make.
Our backpack is lined with Italian quality felt which is also made from recycled polyester. This means that it’s lightweight, durable, and sustainable. The felt lining has two functions. It supports the bag and helps it keep its natural, round and organic shape. It also serves as padding, making a soft and protective pocket for your laptop and mobile phone.
Tags and trims
Because we care about every detail of our products, even our hang tags are ethically sourced from recycled paper. As for the tags inside of the bag, we’ve chosen to use recycled polyester.
Buckles and push buttons
Metals are limited natural resources. That’s why we’re committed to finding the best options and using recycled materials when sourcing our buckles and buttons as far as possible. We’ve chosen to use a Swedish owned factory in China, who are forerunners in sustainable production methods. Our push-buttons are made of 70% recycled brass.
